The List | Tattooed Heroes

I had such trouble coming up with this month’s list. We’re celebrating National M&M Day in October, and it’s about Devin who was kidnapped and kept as a blood slave for a year. He suffers from PTSD, but I did mental health last month and included PTSD there, so it was a no-go.

Then I thought A Vampire Chew Toy. Vampire is a given, right? But I did that in July last year.

So interspecies couples, right? Since Devin and Mars get together, but I did that in November last year, so…

It’s starting to get really hard to come up with ideas. I’ll see if I’ll keep this a monthly feature next year.

Anyway, Devin is covered in skull tattoos, and Mars likes to trace them with his tongue 😁 So let’s go with tattooed heroes. The problem is, once I had this idea, I hopped on over to Goodreads. And scrolling through the list there, I realised that 1. I had read a shitload of the books listed there. 2. Most of them, I don’t remember having a tattooed hero. I’m sure they did, but it has slipped my memory, and I don’t want to list a book unless I’m sure it has tattoos in it.
So the list will be of books where tattoos are important. Ready?

Yakuza Pride by H.J. Brues

These guys have tattoos down pat. It’s a pretty violent tale, and I reread it not too long ago. It has some cool art in it.

YakuWhen yakuza underboss Shigure Matsunaga meets Kenneth Harris at a boring social event, he’s surprised to find himself attracted to the blond gaijin with the mismatched eyes. Shigure is even more pleased when he discovers Ken not only speaks Japanese fluently, but is fluent in Japan’s ways, even the more violent of the martial arts. Ken’s expertise at kendo is not his most striking quality—it’s the passion beneath his quiet, almost fragile exterior that ignites Shigure’s lust, and the two come together as explosively as they spar.

Shigure is a dangerous man in a dangerous position. He’s been trying to keep the peace with the Daito-kai—his hated rivals—but the danger on the streets is escalating, threatening those Shigure most wants to protect. He may claim to love his gaijin, but before he can keep Ken safe, Shigure will have to overcome hostility from his people, a hidden enemy, and, the most insidious opponent of all, his own hard-won pride.

Duck! by Kim Dare

This is a retelling of The Ugly Duckling. It’s a D/s story, and it’s a long time since I read it, but if I remember correctly, that tattoo is of great importance.

Duck!Raised among humans, Ori Jones only discovered he was an avian shifter six months ago. Unable to complete a full shift until he reaches his avian maturity, he still can’t be sure of his exact species.

But with species comes rank, and rank is everything to the avians. When a partial shift allows the elders to announce that they believe Ori to be a rather ugly little duckling, he drops straight to the bottom rung of their hierarchy.

Life isn’t easy for Ori until he comes to the attention of a high ranking hawk shifter. Then the only question is, is Ori really a duck—and what will his new master think when the truth eventually comes out?

The Magpie Lord by K.J. Charles

Now, we can’t have a tattoo theme and not mention The Magpie Lord. It’s not that long since I read it, but now I want to read it again LOL.

MagpieA lord in danger. A magician in turmoil. A snowball in hell.

Exiled to China for twenty years, Lucien Vaudrey never planned to return to England. But with the mysterious deaths of his father and brother, it seems the new Lord Crane has inherited an earldom. He’s also inherited his family’s enemies. He needs magical assistance, fast. He doesn’t expect it to turn up angry.

Magician Stephen Day has good reason to hate Crane’s family. Unfortunately, it’s his job to deal with supernatural threats. Besides, the earl is unlike any aristocrat he’s ever met, with the tattoos, the attitude… and the way Crane seems determined to get him into bed. That’s definitely unusual.

Soon Stephen is falling hard for the worst possible man, at the worst possible time. But Crane’s dangerous appeal isn’t the only thing rendering Stephen powerless. Evil pervades the house, a web of plots is closing round Crane, and if Stephen can’t find a way through it—they’re both going to die.

Muscling Through by J.L. Merrow

This is another one I’ve been meaning to reread. I even got so far as to dig out a portable hard drive where I was sure I had it from the olden days, but it wasn’t there. I’ll get to it one day.

Muscling ThroughThe bigger they come, the harder they fall… in love.

Cambridge art professor Larry Morton takes one, alcohol-glazed look at the huge, tattooed man looming in a dark alley, and assumes he’s done for. Moments later he finds himself disarmed—literally and figuratively. And, the next morning, he can’t rest until he offers an apology to the man who turned out to be more gentle than giant.

Larry’s intrigued to find there’s more to Al Fletcher than meets the eye; he possesses a natural artistic talent that shines through untutored technique. Unfortunately, no one else seems to see the sensitive soul beneath Al’s imposing, scarred, undeniably sexy exterior. Least of all Larry’s class-conscious family, who would like nothing better than to split up this mismatched pair.

Is it physical? Oh, yes, it’s deliciously physical, and so much more—which makes Larry’s next task so daunting. Not just convincing his colleagues, friends and family that their relationship is more than skin deep. It’s convincing Al.

Contains comic misunderstandings, misuse of art materials, and unexpected poignancy.

Catch a Ghost by S.E. Jakes

I might be wrong, but I think S.E. Jakes has tattoos in almost all her books, at least the ones I’ve read. I picked this because of Tom’s dreamcatchers.

Catch A GhostEveryone knows that Prophet—former Navy SEAL, former CIA spook, full-time pain in the ass—works alone and thinks only about the trouble he can cause. But his boss, Phil Butler of Extreme Escapes, LTD., has just assigned Proph not only a new partner but also a case haunted by ghosts from Proph’s past. Suddenly, he’s got to confront them both head on.

Tom Boudreaux—failed FBI agent, failed sheriff, full time believer in bad luck—is wondering why the head of a private contracting firm has hunted him down to offer him a job. Still he’s determined to succeed this time, despite being partnered with Prophet, EE, LTD’s most successful, lethal, and annoying operative, and even though the case is also resurrecting his own painful past.

Together, Prophet and Tom must find a way to take down killers in the dangerous world of underground cage matches, while fighting their own dangerous attraction. And when they find themselves caught in the crossfire, these two loners are forced to trust each other and work together to escape their ghosts . . . or pay the price.

Slide by Garrett Leigh

Here we have a tattoo artist. There are some mental health issues in this one, and while I liked it, I felt a bit… I don’t know if it was handled in the best way. But, it can just be me.

SlideDon’t look back. Don’t you ever look back…

Shy tattoo artist Ash has a troubled past. Years of neglect, drug abuse, and life on the streets have taken their toll, and sometimes it seems the deep, unspoken bond with his lover is the only balm for wounds he doesn’t quite understand.

Chicago paramedic Pete is warmth, love, and strength—things Ash never knew he could have, and never even knew he wanted until Pete showed him. But fate is a cruel, cruel mistress, and when nightmares collide with the present, their tentatively built world comes crashing down.

Traumatic events in Pete’s work life distance him from home, and he doesn’t realize until it’s too late that Ash has slipped away. Betrayal, secrets, and lies unfold, and when a devastating coincidence takes hold, Pete must fight with all he has to save the love of his life.

Off with Their Heads! by K.A. Merikan

Last I checked, this wasn’t available. I’m gonna say that I haven’t read very many K.A. Merikan books, but of those I’ve read, this is by far my favourite! By far!!! Steampunk and zombies, and a crazy artist and yeah…

Off with their headsWhy would anyone need to steal ten zombie heads?

It’s 1907, twenty years after the outbreak of a zombie Plague. For a young medicine student like Clint, the undead bodies provide an opportunity to study human physiology in the working. He is a good young man: tidy, well-mannered and hard working. Focused on his goal to become an excellent surgeon, Clint has a bright future ahead of him. If it weren’t for a shameful secret he’s forced to keep, his life would have been perfect.

Xavier, a peculiar foreigner he finds in the morgue late at night, claims to be an assistant to one of Clint’s professors, but doesn’t know the first thing about the proper way to behead zombies. Xavier’s story has many loose ends, but something about him unlocks all the emotions Clint always kept bottled up inside. When he learns the truth about Xavier, Clint finds himself involved in a conspiracy that could destroy everything he’s worked so hard for. Frightened by the possible consequences, yet strangely fascinated by the eccentric, tattooed stranger, Clint follows him to places he would never dare explore on his own.

Bone Rider by J. Fally

Because it’s one of my favourite books and those tattooed stars on Micha are kinda a big deal.

Bone RiderRiley Cooper is on the run. Misha Tokarev, the love of his life, turned out to be an assassin for the Russian mob, and when it comes to character flaws, Riley draws the line at premeditated murder. Alien armor system McClane is also on the run, for reasons that include accidentally crashing a space ship into Earth and evading U.S. military custody. A failed prototype, McClane was scheduled for destruction. Sabotaging the ship put an end to that, but McClane is dubbed a bone rider for good reason—he can’t live without a host body. That’s why he first stows away in Riley’s truck and then in Riley himself. Their reluctant partnership soon evolves into something much more powerful—and personal—than either of them could have imagined.

Together, they embark on a road trip from hell, made all the more exciting by the government troops and mob enforcers hot on their trail. Misha is determined to win Riley back and willing to do whatever it takes to keep him safe. When hitman and alien join forces, they discover their impressive combined potential for death and destruction. It will take everything Riley has to steer them through the mess they create.

Ego wall

Do I have any books with tattooed heroes? You bet! 😆 I think I have to mention The Bear Claw because Pitch. And A Drop of Moonshine because that reaper telling the world Thorn is an assassin is pretty important. And lastly, I’ll throw in The Wingman because Gavin has quite a few tattoos.

thebearclaw

The List | Gay Romance Books with Mental Health Issues

It’s time for the monthly list post!!! I always try to make it relevant to the release I’m having that month, and this month that is Dear Diary

At first, I was a bit at a loss about what to make the list about because Dear Diary is written to celebrate Dear Diary Day and it’s written in diary form. I haven’t read any queer diary books. My next thought was epistolary, but… I haven’t read many epistolary books.

So since the I of the story is writing a diary because his therapist suggested it as a means to handle his depression, I figured we’d go with mental health.

I’ve included PTSD on this list. It’s a mental health issue, and there are quite a few books with characters who suffer from PTSD. So let’s begin, shall we?

Finding Zach by Rowan Speedwell

Finding ZachFor five years, Zach Tyler, son of one of the world’s richest software moguls, was held hostage, tortured, and abused. When he is rescued at last from the Venezuelan jungle, he is physically and psychologically shattered, but he slowly begins to rebuild the life he should have had before an innocent kiss sent him into hell. His childhood best friend David has lived those years with overwhelming guilt and grief. Every relationship David has tried has fallen apart because of his feelings for a boy he thought dead. When Zach is rescued, David is overjoyed–and then crushed when Zach shuts him out. Two years later, David returns home, and he and Zach must come to terms with the rift between them, what they feel for each other, and what their future could hold. But Zach has secrets, and one of them might well destroy their fragile love.

Out of the Blackness by Carter Quinn

This is a favourite, and I did a ReRead Friday post about it some time back, so you can read all about it here.

Out of the BlacknessA childhood of abuse has left Avery so physically and emotionally scarred he believes he shouldn’t be alive. His only sanctuary has been his relationship with his older foster brother Sam. Avery finally lets Sam convince him to start therapy to help overcome his crippling anxiety, but even that can’t prepare him for the upheaval caused by meeting Noah Yates.

Noah is everything Avery fears. He’s large and physically powerful—and undeniably capable of destroying Avery’s hard-earned progress. Although Noah seems to have a tender streak when it comes to him, Avery is terrified of being victimized again. But no matter how many times he tries to push him away, Noah never goes far.

Noah wants to save Avery, but can he be the catalyst Avery needs to begin the journey out of the blackness?

Suicide Watch by Kelley York

I don’t read a lot of YA, hardly any if I can avoid it. To each their own and all that, but this book! I really enjoyed this book.

Suicide Watch18-year-old Vincent Hazelwood has spent his entire life being shuffled from one foster home to the next. His grades sucked. Making friends? Out of the question thanks to his nervous breakdowns and unpredictable moods. Still, Vince thought when Maggie Atkins took him in, he might’ve finally found a place to get his life—and his issues—in order.

But then Maggie keels over from a heart attack. Vince is homeless, alone, and the inheritance money isn’t going to last long. A year ago, Vince watched a girl leap to her death off a bridge, and now he’s starting to think she had the right idea.

Vince stumbles across a website forum geared toward people considering suicide. There, he meets others with the same debate regarding the pros and cons of death: Casper, battling cancer, would rather off herself than slowly waste away. And there’s quiet, withdrawn Adam, who suspects if he died, his mom wouldn’t even notice.

As they gravitate toward each other, Vince searches for a reason to live while coping without Maggie’s guidance, coming to terms with Casper’s imminent death, and falling in love with a boy who doesn’t plan on sticking around.

Up! by Al Stewart and Claire Davis

Here’s another YA book. I avoid them, but I’ll read anything by Al Stewart 😊

up!After a failed attempt at college, Luke lives a quiet existence with his dad. He recovers from bitter disappointment and gradually life returns to a regular rhythm. Safe and predictable. Every day he gains confidence, but with health comes boredom. From the window ledge, he watches people outside and wishes he could be like them.

There’s another side to Luke. Underneath his bed are five hidden pairs of jeans with matching Dr Martens: yellow, purple, striped, green and tartan. Some days he feels the itch to get them out. Nope. Those days are gone.

One day, an amazing thing happens. Dynamic blog artist Formaldehyde Bob comes to town with an exhibition of light and dark! Luke has crushed on him since being fifteen, idolising the man and his unusual creations. Something about the art calls to Luke like nothing else, makes him believe there might after all be someone out there who thinks in the same way. A soul mate. A bird with a similar song.

No. Luke isn’t going to go and see Formaldehyde Bob. He isn’t. Because he’s happy with his monotonous lot and doesn’t want to see hope sliding down a mountain of sand.

Will Luke take a chance and visit Formaldehyde Bob?
Can the jeans ever be worn again?
Does grumpy Barbara ever smile?
And the most important question: is there any magic left in the world?

Find out in this snowy tale of young love in the most unexpected places.

Fruitcakes by Renee George

This might not be the ‘best’ story I’ve ever read, and you might long for a Christmas story in September (though we’re starting to near that time of year, aren’t we?) but this story had me grinning.

FruitcakesLosing your boyfriend because you see monsters…not good. Getting locked up in the local mental hospital because you accused your boss of being an actual ogre…also not good. Falling for your crazy roommate, who thinks he’s one of Santa’s elves…so not good! Or is it? Come along for a sexy ride as Donner and Bran try to escape the locked ward before Christmas Eve so Bran doesn’t lose the only job important to him. Bestselling author Renee George pens a laugh-out-loud MM Fairytale Christmas…Nuts included!

Donner Thomas has been put into a mental hospital a few days before Christmas after a minor head injury has him seeing magical creatures; Elves, Fairies, Trolls, etc, masquerading as regular human beings. His suspicions are pleasantly confirmed when he meets his new roommate two weeks before Christmas, the gorgeous Bran O’Byrne.

Bran is one of Santa’s Elves. In human guise, Bran gets piss-drunk the night before he is supposed to travel to the North Pole (they don’t all live in the north!), brags about being an Elf to the wrong people, and now he’s been placed in lock-down for 72 hours of observations. If he doesn’t get to the next transport window by morning, he’ll lose his job at Santa’s shop, and there just isn’t much he’s good at other than looking good and making toys.

Sparks fly when these two meet, and they are fated to an encounter neither one of them will ever forget.

Content Notes: GLBT, Male/Male Content, Comedy, Paranormal, Fantasy. This short romance contains explicit male/male content and is intended for 18+ readers.

Huh, I went to grab links to this and couldn’t find it anywhere.

Dirty Laundry by Heidi Cullinan

I was debating including this or not. It’s not my favourite Cullinan story, but… OCD.

Dirty Laundry

A Tucker Springs Novel

Sometimes you have to get dirty to come clean.

When muscle-bound Denver Rogers effortlessly dispatches the frat boys harassing grad student Adam Ellery at the Tucker Springs laundromat, Adam’s thank-you turns into impromptu sex over the laundry table. The problem comes when they exchange numbers. What if Adam wants to meet again and discovers Denver is a high-school dropout with a learning disability who works as a bouncer at a local gay bar? Or what if Denver calls Adam only to learn while he might be brilliant in the lab, outside of it he has crippling social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder?

Either way, neither of them can shake the memory of their laundromat encounter. Despite their fears of what the other might think, they can only remember how good the other one feels. The more they get together, the kinkier things become. They’re both a little bent, but in just the right ways.

Maybe the secret to staying together isn’t to keep things clean and proper. Maybe it’s best to keep their laundry just a little bit dirty.

One Bite With a Vampire by Louisa Masters

I love this series! Here we have poor Noah who’s suffering from PTSD after having been kidnapped by evil scientists. Awesome!

One Bite With a VampireGetting kidnapped was never part of my life plan. But being rescued opened up a whole world of crazy.

It’s not easy being the only human at the Community of Species Government—and especially not when you’re the rescue case. Two years ago, I was planning to go to college, have a wild time, then settle into a normal life. Instead, I was kidnapped, spent months being a test subject, was in hiding for nearly a year, and then found out that my whole existence is a science experiment conducted by the bad guys. It’s definitely time to reassess.

My rescuers at CSG have been awesome… mostly. They gave me a job, a home, and a support network. But the whole demons, vampires, shifters thing is not easy to get used to. Especially when one particular vampire makes me want to take up stake sharpening for a hobby. How can someone be over eight centuries old and have the maturity of a drunk frat boy?
The thing is, teenage mentality or not, Andrew is a fierce protector. With the bad guys still on the loose, I need someone like that on my side. Plus, did I mention that he’s not hard to look at? I could stare at him all day if only he never opened his mouth.

As we race to find my former captor before he can find me, life takes another twist and upends my world all over again. This time, though, I’m ready—after all, I’ve got an eight-hundred-year-old vampire at my back. What could possibly go wrong?

Medium, Sweet, Extra Shot of Geek by R. Cooper

I love this, but despite having seen it on two PTSD lists, I can’t really remember there being any PTSD. Tavio is former military though, so it makes sense. I love a good coffee shop story!

Medium SweetFormer soldier Octavio “Tavio” Reyes works as a barista, a favorite with the customers—especially Tommy O’Shaughnessy. An avowed geek, Tommy comes in daily to flirt, usually under the guise of Trekkie talk. Tavio hesitates; now that he’s out of the army, he’s not sure how out he should be, or whether to take his chances on a geek devoted to sci-fi and comic books. But when Tommy compares him to an unemotional Vulcan, Tavio finally considers dating an out-and-proud nerd. Then Tommy surprises him again and introduces him to his daughter, whom Tommy loves even more than Star Trek or Tavio. Now Tavio has a whole new decision to make: Is he ready to romance a family man?

When All the World Sleeps by Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock

It’s been some time since I read this, but it’s on my list of books I might have to reread soon. It sticks with you.

When All The World Sleeps by Lisa Henry and A.J. Rock

Daniel Whitlock is terrified of going to sleep. And rightly so: he sleepwalks, with no awareness or memory of his actions. Including burning down Kenny Cooper’s house—with Kenny inside it—after Kenny brutally beat him for being gay. Back in the tiny town of Logan after serving his prison sentence, Daniel isolates himself in a cabin in the woods and chains himself to his bed at night.

Like the rest of Logan, local cop Joe Belman doesn’t believe Daniel’s absurd defense. But when Bel saves Daniel from a retaliatory fire, he discovers that Daniel might not be what everyone thinks: killer, liar, tweaker, freak. Bel agrees to control Daniel at night—for the sake of the other townsfolk. Daniel’s fascinating, but Bel’s not going there.

Yet as he’s drawn further into Daniel’s dark world, Bel finds that he likes being in charge. And submitting to Bel gives Daniel the only peace he’s ever known. But Daniel’s demons won’t leave him alone, and he’ll need Bel’s help to slay them once and for all—assuming Bel is willing to risk everything to stand by him.

Rarely Pure and Never Simple by Angel Martinez

One of my all-time favourites! I did a ReReaf Friday post on it just a couple of months ago, so you can read all about it here.

Rarely Pure and Never SimpleVariant children are vanishing at an alarming rate. It will take a uniquely mismatched pair of trackers to untangle a web of conspiracy and misdirection to find them.

In his isolated cabin, variant Damien Hazelwood avoids human contact as much as possible to prevent attacks of blind berserker panic. But his rare talent as a locator makes him the go-to contractor for tricky missing person’s cases and when agents bring him a troubling contract involving missing variant children, he finds it impossible to refuse.

Licensed tracker Blaze Emerson can’t help being irritated when he’s expected to follow the strange, twitchy locator’s lead on his latest case. He works alone, he’s damn good, and as a variant sparker, he has both the fire and the firepower to take on anything out there. Though he has to admit there’s something intriguing about a man who can find people with his brain.

With vastly different temperaments and backgrounds, Damien and Blaze need to negotiate quickly how to work together if they’re going to crack this case. Add in the sudden appearance of Blaze’s outlaw ex, the perils of tracking in the wilds, and a maddening lack of discernible motive or method, and they soon find themselves in as much danger as the kids they’re trying to rescue.

Variant Configurations takes place in a future Earth where humanity is reclaiming its spot in a gradually healing world. This book contains mentions of past abuse, action-adventure style mayhem, and the beginning sparks of a slow burn, series-spanning relationship.

This Little Whatever by Nicole Forcine

I love this because it’s unusual. How often do you get a main character who’s a professional belly dancer? A warning though, the best friend is one of the worst characters I’ve ever read.

This Little WhateverJonathan Mendoza used to live an even crazier life, partying with his tight-knit traveling performance troupe whenever he wasn’t on stage belly dancing. When his sick mother begged him to change his lifestyle, he agreed to try to live sober, but that change is hard. Neither is it easy to stop staring at Dean Winters after he nearly knocks the man over before a performance.

A former recluse, prone to panic attacks after surviving a traumatic accident, Dean isn’t Jonathan’s usual type. Still, Jonathan is irresistibly attracted to him, and decides to cure the itch with a one-night stand. But that night, he’s shaken by Dean’s kindness and consideration—something he’s not used to in a lover or a friend. His best friend, Rachel, who co-owns the troupe with Jonathan, sees Dean as a threat to their friendship and to the troupe—the dream they’ve worked together to build. Billy’s Bones by Jamie Fessenden

There is nothing fluffy or sweet about this. It’s great but chilling. Well worth the time!

Billy's BonesKevin Derocher was thirty-two when he walked into Tom’s office, newly married, a baby on the way, and the collar of his red flannel shirt pulled up to hide the bruises around his throat from when he hanged himself in his garage. After the initial consult, therapist Tom Langois believes he’ll never see Kevin again—until Kevin turns up three years later to make repairs on Tom’s new house.

They become fast friends, and Tom suspects Kevin may be interested in more than friendship. However, Kevin remains haunted by something from his childhood—something so terrible he’s blocked it from his mind. These suppressed memories make it impossible for Kevin to get close to anyone without panicking and lashing out, sometimes violently.

As his past begins to surface, it becomes clear Kevin may hold the key to a twenty-five-year-old mystery: what happened to Billy?

Nor Iron Bars a Cage by Kaje Harper

I’ve mentioned this book so many times by now, but… read it if you haven’t.

Nor Iron Bars a CageFirst I was a sorcerer. Then I was a hermit. For so long—for years that seemed to go on forever—I couldn’t bear to be touched. I put up not just walls but whole stone bunkers to keep everyone out, emotionally, and physically as well. I was protected from people, from ghosts, from specters real and imagined. Sure, I was alone. But I felt safe. Only, after a while, I wasn’t sure any longer whether a totally “safe” empty life was really worth living.
Then Tobin came along. Out of the blue, out of my past, with a summons from the king that he wouldn’t let me ignore. I tried to cling to my isolation, but he wouldn’t give up on me. Tobin never believed in walls.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group’s “Love Has No Boundaries” event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

Widdershins by Jordan L. Hawk

I really need to reread this. I opened it a few weeks ago and read the first couple of pages, then I got interrupted, and I never went back to it. I love everything I’ve ever read by Jordan L. Hawk.

Widdershings by Jordan L. HawkA reclusive scholar. A private detective. And a book of spells that could destroy the world.

Love is dangerous. Ever since the tragic death of the friend he adored, Percival Endicott Whyborne has ruthlessly suppressed any desire for another man. Instead, he spends his days studying dead languages at the museum where he works. So when handsome ex-Pinkerton Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible.

Griffin left the Pinkertons after the death of his partner. Now in business for himself, he must investigate the murder of a wealthy young man. His only clue: an encrypted book that once belonged to the victim.

As the investigation draws them closer, Griffin’s rakish charm threatens to shatter Whyborne’s iron control. But when they uncover evidence of a powerful cult determined to rule the world, Whyborne must choose: to remain safely alone, or to risk everything for the man he loves.

Widdershins is the first novel in the Whyborne & Griffin series, where magic, mystery, and m/m romance collide with Victorian era America. Buy it today and join the adventure.

I’ll Be Your Drill, Soldier by Crystal Rose

More military. It starts out with laughs and giggles, and then it all goes to hell. I’ve been meaning to reread this, but I’m a bit afraid to. It’s one of those books I read before I wrote actively and at that point, I just consumed without thought. I’m afraid reading it again would spoil it for me. As it is now, I have fond memories.

I'll Be Your Drill, SoldierRyan Gracin had a good life until he told his parents he was gay. Since they yanked their support for college he had to find a way to pay for it. Little did he know that joining the Army was going to change his life forever. Especially when he was introduced to a Drill Sergeant who was nicknamed ‘Big Daddy’.

Phillip Grabowski had joined the Army to follow in his father’s footsteps; by the time Ryan entered, he had already made a name for himself. He was a soldier’s soldier, but Ryan was making it really hard for him to remember that.

Among the Living by Jordan Castillo Price

We can’t list mental health books and not include Vic. I think it would be against the law.

Among the Living“This urban fantasy series follows psychic detective Victor Bayne and partner Jacob Marks in a world where psychic ability is accepted, if still a bit creepy. … Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake books would enjoy this series with paranormal activity as well as romance.” – Library Journal Once upon a time if you told doctors you heard voices, they’d diagnose you as schizophrenic, put you on heavy drugs, and lock you away in a cozy state institution to keep you from hurting yourself or others. Nowadays they test you first to see if you’re psychic. Victor Bayne, the psychic half of a PsyCop team, is a gay medium who’s more concerned with flying under the radar than making waves. He hooks up with handsome Jacob Marks, a non-psychic (or “Stiff”) from an adjacent precinct at his ex-partner’s retirement party, and it seems like his dubious luck has taken a turn for the better. But then a serial killer surfaces…and no one can agree what he looks like. Solving murders is a snap when you can ask the victims whodunit, but this killer’s not leaving any spirits behind. Among the Living is book 1 of PsyCop, an ongoing M/M Urban Fantasy series featuring steamy love scenes, astonishing psychic talents, gruesome murders, and a slew of creepy otherworldly creatures.

dear diary

Dear Diary,

My therapist wants me to write a diary to help me manage my depression. I have no idea how it’ll work, but I didn’t have the energy to argue with her.

All I want is for life to go back to the way it was before I walked in on Christopher and Jason. Or maybe not because I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forgive Christopher for cheating on me in our bed, but I want to function as I did before that moment. Before I lost everything.

Do you remember Lars Olsen from school? I do my best to stay away, but it’s like he’s magnetic and pulls me in every time I see him. I shouldn’t be dating. I don’t want to force my crazy on anyone, but he’s asked me to dinner. He deserves a sane partner, so it would be unfair to go, wouldn’t it?

The List | Gay Romance Books with Abuse

It’s a new month and we’re having a new theme. The Book Dragon’s Lair will be out on the 6th and I always try to tie the list of the month to the release of the month. The obvious choice would be dragon books, right? But… I haven’t read all that many dragon books. It would be a short list and it would be the same authors over and over. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but…

So I figured I’d do hurt-comfort since The Book Dragon’s Lair is a hurt-comfort book, but have you any idea how many hurt-comfort books I’ve read? So I went to browse the abuse shelf in the Goodreads MM Romance Group. Now, it didn’t take me long to realise that was about as bad as hurt-comfort, so I’ll just pick a few of my favourites, and we’ll leave it at that 😁

Blind Tiger by Jordan L. Hawk

Pretty much every Jordan L. Hawk would fit the bill, but I picked this one because it has a pretty cover LOL. I liked this a lot, and I’ve been keeping an eye out for when the second book in this story will be out.

Blind Tiger1924, Chicago. Prohibition is in full swing and gang bosses rule the city with might—and magic.

When Sam Cunningham flees his small-town life to try his luck in the big city of Chicago, he quickly finds himself in over his head in a world of gangs, glitz, and glamour. Fortunately, he has his cousin Eldon to teach him the trade of hex-making.

Everything changes the night Sam visits The Pride speakeasy and meets grumpy cheetah-shifter Alistair Gatti. After losing his first witch to the horrors of the World War, Alistair isn’t interested in any new entanglements, romantic or magical. Especially when said entanglement comes in the form of kind, innocent Sam.

When Eldon is brutally murdered, Sam becomes drawn into the dark underworld of the Chicago gangs. Sam must find the missing hex Eldon created for one of the crime bosses—before whoever killed Eldon comes back for him.

Together, Alistair and Sam begin the search for the mysterious hex, diving deep into the seedy side of Chicago’s underworld while dodging rival gangs. And as they come to rely on one another, Alistair realizes he’s falling for the one man he can’t afford to love.

When All the World Sleeps by Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock

It’s been a long time since I read this, but I remember liking it.

When All The World Sleeps by Lisa Henry and A.J. RockDaniel Whitlock is terrified of going to sleep.

Measure of Devotion by C. Faron

Ah, this one. It’s not my typical kind of read, but it sucked me in. It’s been years since I read it, and I remember reading the second book in the series right after.

Measure of DevotionJason Wadsworth is finally headed to university. Leaving behind his father’s cattle ranch in favor of the posh, gaslit streets of Perdana, Jason is determined to climb the social ladder and forget his country roots. If only his father had gifted him with a more upscale slave.

Humbled by his first breakup, Jason grows to appreciate his ever-faithful slave and soon discovers that Kale is everything he’s ever wanted. Now he needs to prove to Kale that his love is genuine.

This is another one that pops up in my head pretty often.

A Casual Weekend ThingIn the two years since Doug Heavy Runner left the life of an openly gay Miami police officer to return home to the Salish-Kootenai Reservation, he’s carved out an empty life as a small-town deputy, relying on out-of-town one-night stands to keep him sane. As they investigate, they discover Christopher’s dead brother has set them on the trail of a psychotic pedophile who will stop at nothing to silence his last victim. The search for the victim goes horribly wrong, leaving Doug hospitalized and Christopher at the mercy of the killer….

With a Kiss by Kim Dare

I’ve been meaning to reread this. We’ll see if I ever get around to it, but if I remember correctly, it’s domestic abuse in this one and a sleeping vampire.

But, when he’s assigned to visit a comatose man, he soon finds himself spilling out his whole life story in an effort to fill the silence. Rarely Pure and Never Simple by Angel Martinez

Because it’s awesome and I recently reread it.

The Book Dragon's Lair

Time and time again, Ryu the Ravenous has petitioned to be allowed to move to the human realm, but every application has been denied. As a black dragon of near royal blood with plenty of gemstones in his treasure cave, many females want him for a mate. Ryu doesn’t want a female mate, though, and when he’s badly burned in a conflict between tribes, he sees his chance to escape.

Egil Olsen is running The Book Dragon’s Lair, a bookstore on Dragon Row, while Draken the Dreadful, his mate, is away fighting a war on the other side of the veil. The relief of not having Draken around is great. For the first time in years, Egil doesn’t have to watch every move he makes. When word reaches him that Draken is on his way home after having been injured, he considers running away.

The dragon stepping over the threshold to The Book Dragon’s Lair isn’t Draken, though. He claims to be, but Egil knows his mate, and while all dragons are dangerous, the male standing before him is nowhere near as cruel as his mate. Ryu never wanted to be a book dragon. Books don’t sparkle, but if it’s the price he has to pay to be in the human realm, he will pay it. He’ll take over Draken the Dreadful’s treasure, and he hopes he can take over his mate, too. Egil doesn’t want to be mated to a dragon, but without a mate, he’d be homeless and without a job.

A few hours after having met Ryu, Egil thinks being mated to him might not be too bad, but how will they be able to fool the people around them into believing Ryu is Draken? And what will happen if the real Draken comes back?
